Hibou Odoo Suite: Payroll: US Payroll: California State Payroll


The purpose of this documentation is to outline the use case and processes associated with Hibou's California State Payroll module for Odoo. 

This module includes a contribution register and partner for the California Department of Taxation. Additionally, it adds company-level California Unemployment Insurance Tax, California Employee Training Tax, contract-level California Exemptions, and California State Disability Insurance.

Getting Started

First thing's first, we need to install the module! Navigate to the Apps application, remove the Apps filter from the search bar and then search for 'USA - California - Payroll'. When ready, hit install.

  Good to Know!

The California State Payroll module requires Hibou's USA Payroll module and Odoo's Payroll application. However, if you do not already have these installed, Odoo will install them for you during this module's installation!


To get started, navigate to the Employees application.

Configuring an Employee Contract.

Once there, select CONTRACTS .

This will bring you to a kanban view of all employee contracts. Select an existing contract or create one by clicking CREATE .

In the Salary Structure field, select "USA California Employee" from the dropdown menu.

Ensure you have a Wage set for the employee.

After selecting USA California Employee for the Salary Structure, click on the US State Filing tab. 

Fill in the following fields, which are found on the employee's completed DE-4:

  • CA Filing Status: Employee's California Filing Status

  • DE-4 Allowances: The number of allowances from Regular Withholding Allowances, Worksheet A on DE-4

  • Additional Withholding: Number of Allowances from the Estimated Deductions, Worksheet B on DE-4

It is also important to enter W4 information in the US Federal Filing tab section, which is provided by Hibou's USA Payroll module.

When finished, hit SAVE.


Ensure that the status of the contract is Running. A contract that is not Running cannot be used during Payroll. To change this, simply click 'Running' in the status bar on the contract.

New Payslip Computations and Categories

When running payroll, after hitting COMPUTE SHEET you will see the various new California State taxes in the Salary Computation tab.

This module includes new partners and contribution registers for:

  • California Department of Taxation - Unemployment Insurance Tax

  • California Department of Taxation - Income Tax Withholding

  • California Department of Taxation - Employee Training Tax

  • California Department of Taxation - State Disability Insurance

It also adds contract-level California Exemptions and California State Disability Insurance along with company-level California Unemployment Insurance Tax and California Employee Training Tax.
